REST! REST! REST!

Researchers studying brain connectivity found that highly creative people show stronger communication between the brain's imagination network and its control regions (the parts responsible for directing, evaluating, and focusing thought) even at rest. Those two systems usually work against each other. When you focus, imagination quiets. When you rest, focus drops.

But in highly creative people they work together. And that cooperation only happens when the brain is NOT under pressure. You cannot force it, and you can only make room for it through adding rest into your routine.

The pressure to stay consistent and visible is REAL, but it is not designed with the creative process in mind. Staying consistent and visible is designed for production, and production and creation are not the same thing.

When you treat rest as optional you are not working harder or being disciplined. Research shows you are slowly narrowing the source or shrinking the well you draw from.

Rest is not where the work stops. It is where the real work begins.

Reflection:

Where in your creative process have you been pushing through instead of stepping back? What might be waiting on the other side of that pause?

THIS WEEKS CHALLENGE:

This week, schedule one block of unstructured rest like you would any other appointment. No input, no content, no agenda. Treat it as non-negotiable. Notice what your mind does when you stop demanding something from it.
